The Local Rivers and Lochs
Our 16 acre grounds are bounded on two sides by the river Dulnain. The single bank up to the river median for a distance just short of 1 mile belongs to Dalrachney. You may fish for wild brown trout on our beat when you are resident at Dalrachney Lodge.
Fishing in our area is available within a short drive on the rivers Spey, Dulnain, Findhorn and several small lochs. Beats are either public or private. Rods are £30 per day upwards. The Dulnain is a major tributary of the Spey, joining about 6 miles down-stream of our location. It is a spate river originating some 20 miles above us at about 2000 ft asl in some of the most beautiful country you will find.
The Findhorn is a similar spate river with different but also spectacular origins flowing directly some 60 miles into the Moray Firth.
The Spey is of a similar length to the Findhorn but a much larger system generally some 10 miles to the east being fed from the Dulnain and other rivers further down-stream.
Mostly you would be fishing for Salmon on these rivers up to 20lb or so, perhaps more typically 10 - 15lb. Wild brown trout are also there. Sea Trout will also be caught most likely on the Spey at night.
About four small natural lochs will be found within a few miles of us. They are stocked with Brown and Rainbow trout. Most offer the use of a boat. Rods start at about £20 per day. For a play around there are two other stocked lochs locally where you can take your child with an almost guaranteed catch for £10 or so.
Grantown-on-Spey is usually taken to be the mid Spey fishing location and base but it is interesting to note that drawing a comparative 10 mile radius around Grantown and also Carrbridge indicates that approximately double the river length is available on the local rivers when located in Carrbridge. The upper Spey as far as Loch Alvie, near enough the entire Dulnain and most of the upper Findhorn are within easy reach.
Top of the range private fishing on the Spey at Tulchan and Castle Grant can be arranged in early season, February/March for reasonable rates, say £25-£30 per day. Main season on application but in the region of £75-£150 per day rod, if available.
Prices are for guidance only and we have no control or influence over these costs.
Professional Instruction
It is likely that you have all the Bruce & Walker rods and Hardy Reels you might require together with the experience to use them but if not MORTIMER can put you in touch with a Qualified instructor. Perhaps a friend or member of your family would benefit from a day or two of fly-casting instruction.
How to obtain Permits
After you have made your accommodation reservation (or before if you want to ensure fishing is available) with us we will put in touch with the people who provide the permits and can also arrange equipment rental and Ghillies to assist. The season in this area is mid February to end September for Salmon. No Sunday river fishing. Fly and Spinning dependant on local rules and water levels. Plan on fly only most of the season. Rules are strictly enforced.

The Next Step
There is not a great deal more to say but if we can be of further assistance please do not hesitate to email us. The proprietor has been fishing locally for 15 years and will assist. One of his Salmon is pictured below and is in fact mounted in the Bar. River Findhorn 1991, 14lb.
